Never, never, never give up. - Winston Churchill

Losing your drive to train stinks, but it inevitably happens to all of us. Rather than throwing in the towel, it may be time to adjust your expectations and give yourself permission to miss a few workouts.

I train year round to compete in Spartan Race (an obstacle course race series). This past spring, my training included running 40-45 miles/week plus 3 days of strength training. My hard work payed off with a third place finish last April. This was my best finish in obstacle course racing to date, so I

left there that day feeling highly motivated to continue training.

However, by June, my drive to continue training hard began to wane. The hot summer days, having the kids home for summer, plus a couple vacations in the mix, was a recipe for mediocre enthusiasm. But I'm no quitter. Rather than saying, "Screw it" and stopping my training for the summer, I modified my original training plans. I gave myself permission to reduce my training volume until I felt my passion for training come back. Since then I have only had 2-3 workouts per week. I have lost some of fitness, but I've maintained enough of it that I can get back to competitive shape in 6-8 weeks.

The point is, no matter how motivated you are currently feeling about training, realize that it is totally normal to have highs and lows. The important thing is to accept it and modify your plans to fit your current mental state.

Your Brain Loves the Gym, presented by Debbie Roman & Tyler Turner, Founders of Tyde Mind & Body

Saturday, October 6th at 10:00am at CINCOfit on Cinco Ranch Blvd.

Your gym session doesn’t just keep your body on-point, it sharpens your mind too. If you exercise regularly, you know exercise always makes your mind feel clearer and more focused. New research shows that exercise not only reduces our waistlines and emotional stress, but that exercise can have long-term measurable effects on brain function.

Learn how physical activity will have an immediate, positive benefit for your brain including your mood and your focus. In addition, you will gain an understanding of how the right exercise can protect your brain from different conditions like depression, Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Finally, we will look at the recommended mix of cardio and weight training needed for long-term improvements to cognitive function.
