If there is one thing that is holding you back from reaching your fitness goals, I would bet that factor is consistency. As a trainer with more than 10 years of experience, I’ve witnessed countless people that fail to reach their goals because they are missing this important key to success. When it comes to exercise, too often we allow the busyness of life to keep us from getting to the gym. Making a daily habit of exercise takes practice, hard work, and serious dedication. To expect perfection 100% of the time would lead us all towards frustration and eventually giving up on our goals, However,we should strive to get our workouts in the majority of the time.
Here are three tips to help you begin improving your workout consistency:
- Discover your Why: Why are you here? Do you want to run a marathon? Do you have high blood pressure/cholesterol/diabetes/etc? Lose weight? Gain Strength? What ever the reason, you must have something that compels you to get to the gym.
- Find a Workout Buddy: If you have a workout partner, you are 33% more likely to stick to a workout routine. So find a neighbor, freind, co-worker or relative with similar fitness goals and schedule your workouts together.
- Schedule your Workouts: I personally like to use the calendar in my iPhone to schedule my weekly workouts. However, life is busy and my schedule is constantly changing, so every night at 8:30, I have an alarm set to remind me to schedule my workout for the next day. This helps keep me to account for any events that aren’t a part of my normal schedule and still get in my workouts.
