Eat to Live in 2017

Instead of living to eat, eat to live.

There’s a lot of truth to the saying “instead of living to eat, eat to live.”  For many, unhealthy eating and overeating is the norm.  Obesity is at epidemic levels today.  2 out of 3 adults in the US are overweight or obese.  According to the American Heart Association, the health risks of obesity include Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the key to achieving a healthy weight is a lifestyle that includes healthy eating and regular physical activity.  Instead of fad dieting, people need to change the way they think about food and exercise.  We can’t all be a size 6, but we can make healthier choices when it comes to diet and exercise.

CALORIC DEFICIT THROUGH DIET

Imagine someone gave you an expensive sports car for your birthday.  Along with the car, instructions were included specifying the type of fuel to use.  It wouldn’t be good stewardship of the sports car to

  1. Put the wrong fuel in the fuel tank of the car
  2. Over fill the sports car with fuel

Like an expensive sports car needs the right type and amount of fuel, our bodies need proper nutrition. Calories are the energy in food (protein, carbohydrates, and fats).  Fruits and vegetables are low in calories but high in nutrients.  Fried and fatty foods are high in calories but low in nutrients.  Researchers have determined that 3500 calories = 1 pound of fat.  The excess calories in our diet add up so we need to watch our caloric intake.

Reducing Caloric Intake

*Eating less fried foods

*Eating less empty calorie food

*Substituting high calorie, unhealthy foods for low calorie, healthy foods

*Eating more fruits and veggies

*Reducing portion sizes at home and when going out to eat

*Using calorie counting apps such as MyFitnessPal  (which is free by the way)

These little changes can add up over time.  Instead of ordering a soda, have water with lemon.  Instead of having a big greasy breakfast, try a bagel with light cream cheese.

 

CALORIC DEFICIT THROUGH EXERCISE

Physical activity is another way to burn calories.  Instead of being sedentary, choose a healthier lifestyle.  Everyday activities like walking and household chores burn calories.  It’s important to consult your physician and determine what diet and exercise program is right for you.

Daily Decisions
